The Unsettling Truth About Blueair Air Purifiers

My name is Barry Cohen, and I am the owner of Absolute Air Cleaners, Air Purifiers And Allergy Products. I am an indoor air quality (IAQ) expert and highly knowledgeable in HEPA air purifiers, HEPA vacuum cleaners, HEPA vacuum cleaners and other quality products for dust, allergy, and asthma control.
I have been a leader in the allergy control products industry since 1989 and the business has been online since 1994. I love what I do for a living, and it is very gratifying to help each of our thousands of customers choose the right allergy products that will best fit their immediate needs.
However, there is one thing that always burns me up! This is when manufacturers and dealers sell products that are not as advertised and do not live up to their bogus marketing claims because of their poor design, low quality, and ploys to pull as much aftermarket filter replacement money from their customers as possible!
An air purifier product line that should be reviewed to expose the truth is the Blueair air line of air purifiers! These Blueair units can be found in many well-known department stores and big box stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy, Costco, and Target, As well as in Amazon and select online allergy product websites.
I feel that Blueair and the companies that sell them make many advertising claims that are not at all accurate or true. They advertise how great these air purifiers are while boasting about their HEPASilent air filters and electrostatic ionizer technology that provides high-test results with its (CADR) Clean Air Delivery Ratings from AHAM, which stands for the Association Of Home Appliance Manufacturers. Blueair also advertises the advantage of its filter change indicator technology.
I Will Now Explain The Truth About What We Feel Blueair And Their Dealers Are Not Telling You.
The Blueair factory headquarters boast that these units are engineered in Sweden. This statement is written all over their product information pages and advertising! The truth Is that almost all Blueair air purifier components, parts, and cases are MADE MOSTLY IN CHINA! With only some limited unit parts and assembly done in the USA, Geesh!
The different models range from little mini units at $119.99 to $2,499.00, which is extremely expensive for any air purifier with almost all of the parts Made In China!
The HEPASilent filters in the Blueair air purifier ARE NOT ACTUAL HEPA FILTERS AT ALL!
Blueair deceptively calls them HEPASilent to fool potential buyers into thinking that they are actual HEPA filters because of the name. The truth is that they are not genuine HEPA filters. These are much lower quality ordinary pleated type air filters in cardboard frames for most units that fit into two unsealed slots on two sides of the air purifier and one pleated filter that is made to fit across the top of the unit.
I have personally tested some of the Blueair units, and I discovered that the slots that hold the pleated air filters have air gaps that allow dirty contaminated air to bypass around the pleated air filters and back into the indoor air environment to breathe and react to again.
The factory wants Blueair air purifier owners to replace the set of costly pleated air filters once every 3 to 6 months for average everyday use! This will cost an ongoing small fortune for the future years of operation. Blueair also up-sells even more expensive additional add-on filters for use in smoky areas or to improve the filtration of their basic mediocre pleated filters.
In a short period, the filter replacement cost is more money than most of the units cost to purchase in the first place.
Blueair advertises how great the electrostatic ionizer is in their air purifier. They claim that it helps to clean the dusty air and allergens from the room in your indoor air environment while bringing more debris to the filters!
This is not true! The people at Blueair need to tell you that by including an ionizer in their air purifier or in any air purifier; the ionizer will also blow negative ions into the room's air to attach to the floating allergens and dust particles in the air where the machine is operating in.
After the negative ions grab onto a very large percentage of the floating dust particles and airborne allergens in your homes indoor air they will drop like a rock out of the indoor air's suspension, many feet away from the Blueair unit's low-quality filtration system! This allows the dust and allergens you are trying to get rid of to land directly onto your furniture, floors, countertops, and even your and your children's beds! The truth is that Blueair units are designed to drop a large amount of these reactive particulates out of the air before they can get to the air purifier's filters.
We Feel That There Is A Underhanded Reason For This!
Others and I believe that the Blueair unit design is the MAIN reason for the high CADR ratings the Blueair air purifier is getting from AHAM. This private organization tests their PAID member's products while ALSO promoting them! AHAM is mostly a marketing club that companies like Blueair and others in the appliance industry join and pay many thousands of dollars each and every year plus a hefty percentage of their total yearly sales earnings to be promoted by AHAM.
In exchange, they receive flashy and official-looking gold seals printed on their product boxes stating that their products have passed all AHAM Standards!
Next is what we feel is a underhanded program to their customers put out by Blueair that includes the filter replacement indicator, extended warranty, and a filter auto-ship program!
Any air average purifier manufacturer would have the customer view the filters, especially the pre-filter, to see how dirty they are before replacement is necessary. Many units also utilize a simple back pressure sensor and indicator to let the customer know when the air purifier's HEPA filter is dirty enough to replace with a new one!
Blueair does not use a pressure sensor! They Use A Timer!! And here is why they do it!
First of all, for the Blueair units, the filter replacement timer pushes the customer to spend more money replacing three filters every six months, even though the filters may or may not be dirty enough to need to be replaced. The optional extended warranty for the Blueair air purifier is contingent on forcing the customer to purchase three new filters every six months on an auto-ship and auto-charge program that is voided if the customer stops buying filters! No More Money Spent With Blueair and No More Air Purifier Warranty!
Is this an ethical way to conduct business with people that are often sick, miserable, and desperate with a great need to improve the indoor air quality for themselves, their children, or family? We do not think so! How about you?
Blueair Sells Refurbished Units
It is dangerous and unethical to ever sell refurbished, previously used air purifiers to anyone! This is because no one has any idea about what has already contaminated the air purifier! For example, toxic mold, bacteria, or an oil-based pesticide could have contaminated the unit! The truth is that these dangerous contaminates could easily be attached to the case of any refurbished Blueair air purifier to find a way back into your indoor air to breathe and react too, even if the filters have been replaced. We recommend never purchasing a refurbished air purifier from any company or person!
