Chemotherapy is a tough but often necessary treatment to go through when treating different types of cancer and preparing the body to accept a stem cell transplant, bone marrow transplant, or organ transplant. After the chemotherapy is applied it destroys the body’s immune system and its ability to protect and fight off infections, bacteria, yeast, and viruses for a lengthy period of time until the immune system is able to slowly rebuild itself.

During and after chemotherapy it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to protect the body from exposure to viruses, bacteria, and mold spores that can penetrate through the body’s weakened immune system to possibly cause dangerous complications and more problems that must be treated!

It is very important to prepare and protect the home’s indoor environment before, during, and after chemotherapy to reduce the body’s exposure to any opportunistic viruses, bacteria, and mold spores that may possibly enter the body to cause more setbacks for an already weakened body.

The first step to prepare your home is to unclutter it of stuff that is not necessary and would have to be moved around and cleaned again and again while you are in a possible weakened state during and after chemotherapy.  Get rid of any clutter by throwing it out, donating it to those that are in need, or box it up and store it for later so its not in the way in your everyday life during and after chemotherapy. If you decide to do any painting in or on your home before during or after chemotherapy make sure that you ONLY USE VOC FREE PAINT that will not outgas chemicals including solvents into your indoor breathing environment!

SUGGESTION–Benjamin Moore and AFMSafecoats both make a great line of VOC free paints.

Next, it is extremely important to thoroughly and totally clean your home to limit exposures to any possible viruses, bacteria, and mold spores.  Clean and disinfect all hard surfaces especially in the bathrooms and kitchen with natural cleaner disinfectants when possible or with bleach-based cleaner disinfectants while ventilating the area with fresh air to kill any viruses, bacteria or mold spores that may be present.

Do your laundry often and wash your bedding in hot water at least twice a week and try to always keep clean bedding to sleep in.

IMPORTANT: Clean and disinfect all hard surface floors and thoroughly vacuum all carpeting and furniture with a 100 percent sealed HEPA vacuum cleaner if at all possible! NOTE that most vacuum cleaners are not properly sealed and they SPEW dead skin, pet dander, and dirt into the air to breathe that is LOADED with bacteria that people going through chemotherapy should not be exposed to!

TEST your vacuum cleaner for leakage by simply running it while placed into a beam of direct sunlight. Since most vacuum cleaners including the lower quality Chinese made HEPA vacuum cleaners from big box department stores are not properly sealed both at the filter and the vacuum cleaners case itself you will most likely see tens of thousands of dust particles with attached bacteria blowing into the beam of sunlight and into the air you breathe!

SUGGESTION—Check out the (Made In The USA) Air Storm HEPA Vacuum Cleaner! This powerful but lightweight canister HEPA vacuum cleaner is 100 percent sealed like a drum so absolutely zero dust and bacteria will blow back into the indoor air environment to breathe while you are vacuuming! The Air Storm HEPA vacuum cleaner is 99.99 percent efficient down to .3 microns of particle size, which is good enough to be able to do small asbestos and lead abatement jobs! Also, you can fill the dirt collection bag to the top without losing any suction or cleaning ability at all!

IMPORTANT: Clean Air For Better Health! Anyone going through chemotherapy or suffering from a compromised immune system will greatly benefit from high-quality HEPA air purifiers with a non-ozone producing ultraviolet light system that is able to destroy opportunistic viruses, bacteria, and mold spores in the main living spaces of their home. Most people will place one HEPA air purifier unit with a UV light system in the bedroom for better sleeping and one in the family room or in any room that is frequently occupied. It is important to have units that are quiet but powerful enough to provide a high air exchange rate per hour in any sized room or open space.

SUGGESTION—Check out the (Made In Canada) Airpura UV600 HEPA air purifier with its germ-killing non-ozone producing ultraviolet light system with an 18 pounds of an activated carbon filter to remove outgassing chemicals and odors from the indoor air. The Airpura UV600 is the HEPA air purifier of choice in transplant hospitals and for anyone going through chemotherapy or with a weakened immune system because it is 100 percent sealed against any kind of dust, bacteria, or virus leakage and it will pass a zero laser particle count test at 99.99 percent of efficiency down to .3 microns of particle size. The  Airpura UV600 HEPA air purifier also holds the unique design of aiming its 30,000 microwatts non-ozone producing UV lamp into the intake sides of its sealed HEPA filter 24 hours a day to destroy viruses, bacteria, and mold spores before they can penetrate into the pleats of its medical-grade HEPA filter. This unique design is very important to people with compromised immune systems and it also extends the life of the HEPA filter.

The Airpura UV600 has a super quiet variable-speed motor and it will provide up to 18 air exchanges per hour in average-sized bedrooms and it will effectively clean open rooms or indoor spaces up to 1500 square feet in size.  The UV600 is only 15” X 15” wide and 21” high and constructed of high-quality metal, not plastic and Its sturdy castor wheels allow easy movement on carpeting or hard floor surfaces.

SUGGESTION—When living in a home with a ducted air conditioning or heating system it is a good idea to replace any low-efficiency disposable air filters with a much higher 80-90 percent efficient lifetime washable self-charging electrostatic air filter to keep the air handler unit clean and to catch any free-flowing dust that may have bacteria or mold spores attached to it before it can enter back into the system to contaminate your indoor air quality. These self-charging electrostatic air filters are custom-made to size to replace your low-quality disposable air filter in the same space they are now operating in.
